Why Is My House So Humid?

What causes high indoor humidity in summer and winter, why it matters, and how your HVAC system can help fix it.

HVAC work by Spartan Heating & Air

An oversized air conditioner

An AC that's too big for the house cools quickly and shuts off before it has time to pull moisture out of the air. The house hits the set temperature but still feels clammy.

Fan set to ON

When the fan runs constantly, moisture that collected on the indoor coil can blow right back into the house. Setting the fan to AUTO usually helps.

Basements and everyday moisture

Central Wisconsin basements, showers, cooking, and drying clothes all add moisture. Bath fans, a kitchen exhaust fan, and a dehumidifier in the basement make a big difference.

Winter humidity is different

If you see heavy condensation on windows in winter, indoor humidity is too high for the outdoor temperature. A humidifier set too high or poor ventilation is usually the cause.
